A key to unlock ecumenism

UNLOCK Glasgow visited the parish of St Philip’s, Ruchazie in February presenting their “pilgrimage work” to local parishioners.

The group seeks to assist people in their reading of the Bible and this was the first time they had visited a Catholic Church in the city.  The team uses a strong approach geared towards reader involvement and day-to-day experience rather than preaching their knowledge and parish priest at St Philip’s Fr Joseph Sullivan believes those who attended the event will benefit greatly from the evening.

“Most importantly of all the method does not start from an attitude of “We know - you don’t know,” Fr Sullivan said.

“From the very beginning it shows that the Bible is not a strange book which is difficult to read.  The Unlock material shows us good attitudes from the Bible.  The event was so helpful that those present will be using the Unlock materials in the coming months.”

Local minister, the Reverend Bill Hunter joined the group for the visit of Unlock Glasgow and Fr Sullivan hopes the meeting will point the way towards a future of ecumenical sharing in Ruchazie.

“Pope Benedict asked recently for renewal of parishes through good scripture reflection whilst Archbishop Conti has been tireless in promoting ecumenism,” Fr Sullivan said.
