Bricks, building and big hearts Print E-mail

From Unlock Glasgow April Reference Group report:

march-april_2009_461.jpg“Building, bricks and big hearts” took place at St Gregory’s RC Church Wyndford on 28th March, when we looked at how Nehemiah got the community together to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.

The resources for this event were developed in teamwork with Sonya who works for Unlock in Liverpool, and also in teamwork with Graham Mackie who lives in the Wyndford, and who shared the leadership both in the planning and at the event.

The schools closures is a big issue in the Wyndford and that was explored at the Unlock event.  Over Easter the local churches decided to re-route their annual Walk with the Cross to pass the schools. Both Church of Scotland minister and Catholic priest said a few words and joined in prayer in front of the schools.  Because of this support many of the local community joined the Walk and went together to the Good Friday service afterwards.  Some of the parents who were “sitting in” at the schools were in tears, they were so moved that the churches were acting together to support them.

From email with report for the Priority Areas Enews:

Maryhill parish grouping churches have tried to be supportive of parents who through the Easter holidays have been occupying the Wyndford schools threatened with closure.  We decided to re-route our Walk with the Cross on Good Friday to go through the Wyndford, stopping at the schools - and because we were making this gesture of support we were joined by parents, grandparents, children, two MSPs and members of St. Gregory's Church as well as our own churches. We were a large enough group even to be honoured by a police presence, and to rate a mention in the Sunday Herald. Most importantly, it encouraged and deeply moved people in the community, that the churches cared, and were acting together.

The whole procession was welcomed for a cup of tea at an Easter art exhibition organised by members of the parish grouping in partnership with local schools, and  most people also stayed for the Good Friday worship. It was a memorable and very moving evening.

Edited piece put together and actually used for the website report:

The schools closures has been and is still a big issue in the Wyndford  community and that was explored at the Unlock event.  Over Easter the local churches decided to re-route their annual Walk with the Cross to pass the Wyndford schools, in support of the local parents who had been occupying both school buildings through the Easter holidays. The Good Friday Walk paused outside the schools, and together Church of Scotland minister and Catholic priest said a few words and joined in prayer in front of the schools.  Because of this support many of the local community, parents, grandparents, children, even 2 MSPs joined the Walk and continued on to the Good Friday service afterwards.  It was a large enough group to be honoured by a police presence, and to rate a mention in the Sunday Herald.  Some of the parents who were “sitting in” at the schools were in tears, they were so moved that the churches were acting together to support them.
